About the event

Be part of the next generation

If you're in Year 9 or 10, Girls in Power is a three-day, two-night work exposure event which will arm you with confidence in making the right career choice. Participate in activities that develop your skills, tour workplaces to increase your knowledge, hear from amazing female leaders and spend time with other girls just like you.

We know that you can’t be what you can’t see.

Lots of people talk about renewable energy careers, and this event will unpack what those careers are, the pathways to reach them, subjects you should study and will also instill the belief that you can be the next generation of Girls in Power.

Where will you be based?

The event will be one day and night in Poatina Village, with one day in central Tasmania, and one day and night in Launceston.

What will you get up to?

We don’t want to give too much away, but here is a little bit of what you can expect;

  • Transform energy in water to electricity
  • Fly a drone to sample water
  • Protect birds from wind turbines
  • Feel the buzz of a substation
  • Harness the energy from waves
  • Jump into an EV
  • Step back into the history of hydropower
  • Explore the power of the sun

What do I bring?

Just yourself and an overnight bag.  A packing list will be provided to successful applicants.

Who will be supervising?

The education team at Hydro Tasmania will provide supervision, as will teachers from the Department for Education, Children, and Young People, Catholic Education Tasmania and Independent schools. Industry representatives will provide site-specific supervision.

How much will it cost?

Nothing! All you need to do is come along and soak it up.  Food, accommodation and transport during the event is included.  This event has been made possible by funding through the Tasmanian Government's Grant Program ‘Supporting Women to Succeed’ and the support of our industry partners.

Will the event be COVID safe?

A full COVID safety plan will be in place and our event will be a mask friendly zone.

I am a trans, non-binary or gender diverse young person.  Am I welcome to apply?

We acknowledge that the experience of the gender diverse community do not always overlap with the experiences of women and girls, which is the primary focus of this event. The aim of Girls in Power is to showcase the many pathways to careers in STEM and the energy industry, and to work in breaking down barriers and stereotypes of the traditionally male-dominated workplace. Many of these barriers experienced by women and girls are also experienced by gender diverse people. If you are non-binary, trans or gender-nonconforming and can see your experiences reflected, we encourage you to apply. If you have specific questions or concerns, please reach out to us.
